What Remains

About

Luca Barrios Lumbreras is a Spanish-French artist and creative now based in Brussels, Belgium, but has lived in Spain, Belgium and Japan. His practice sits at the intersection of digital media, performance, and fashion, working with tools such as TouchDesigner, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, AI, and interactive art. Interested in identity, physicality, and the ambiguity of perceptual memory, his work often emerges from collaborations with dancers, musicians, and performers. His project "What Remains" sits at the intersection of these themes.

Project

What Remains is an immersive installation that translates video footage from my travels back to Japan, where I used to live a couple of years ago. This immersive installation translates video footage of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. Its streets, forests and temples are rendered into animated point clouds that serve as a stratified perception of these spaces. Using depth map technology, each frame is reconstructed as fragmented, three-dimensional, eroded memory. The viewer can therefore navigate dissolving landscapes, where absence becomes the language of recollection. It draws on Robert Smithson’s notion that mind and earth are in a constant state of erosion.
