About

Julia van Dijck (2001) is a painter from the Netherlands, working primarily with oil painting and airbrush. Always originating from self-portrait, her paintings touch on topics such as identity and the female experience. Her paintings use varying techniques, resulting in contrasting images, with which she tries to use humour in addressing bigger themes. From using her experience on dating apps to talking about societal gender roles, she searches for the recognizable in the personal.

Project

Leopard Print, Baby Doll is one of the paintings from Julia van Dijck’s continuing oeuvre. Inspired by the flashiness of leopard print (and Poison Ivy) and the glossiness of baby doll makeup, this painting is a coming together of different aesthetics. Van Dijck combines her interest in 80s pop culture with a classic grey suit, resulting in a dynamic yet contradictory image, depicting a commentary on representation of women, as well as her admiration for leopard print.
